Telling Tales out of School: Part III
A rule, a routine, and a resignation

The Rules
“Charlotte”0 and I had met online, early on in the days when it had somewhat become a normal way of meeting someone—but before “swiping right”1 had become a thing. The first date was at the neighbourhood coffee shop, with the usual conversations you have with someone new. She had even brought along some “getting to know you” conversation-starter cards.2
The first date went well enough, so she suggested we go on a second. We attended “An Evening with Oliver Sacks,”3 in which Sacks shared his memories of growing up in London and how these experiences had influenced his life’s work. He also discussed his latest book, Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood. It was fascinating.
